Rev. Diana Cheifetz
Diana is a Japanese-American Presbyterian (PCUSA) minister who has served rural, urban, suburban, white and racial-ethnic churches. She also has preached in the pulpits of various denominations, and has completed a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching.
Diana Nishita Cheifetz grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. She received her Certificate in the Art of Spiritual Direction (1996), and her Masters of Divinity (2003) from San Francisco Theological Seminary, and was ordained by San Francisco Presbytery later that year.
She has also served as Interim Associate Pastor at Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco, as well as working in the area of Christian spirituality, including providing spiritual direction and training others in spiritual direction. Diana has been doing spiritual direction with pastors, seminary students, and lay people since 1996. In addition to her private practice, she has been on the staff of the Lloyd Center at San Francisco Theological Seminary providing spiritual direction and supervision.
She has been married to Jeff, a Presbyterian pastor, for over 35 years, and they have a daughter who is also a Presbyterian minister, and a son who is an artist. In her own words, Diana describes the kind of congregation she is looking to serve:
I want to serve a warm and lively congregation made of members who want to grow in their relationships to God. As a spiritual director, I have been helping people grow in their relationships to God for the past 18 years. As a pastor, I am keenly attentive to people's longing for God through all the ups and downs of life. And I know how to help them find God, or walk in faith and pray, even in those times when God is hard to see.
I long to serve a people who love worship, who know and desire its beauty, reverence, awe - and yes, fun. I am a strong preacher and love creative worship that is reverent, powerful, and sometimes playful. It means a lot to hear that I have touched hearts, or spoken a timely word to the congregation. And I enjoy drawing people into worship leadership, as I did in the context of my Doctor of Ministry work (even preaching a group sermon together!).
I hope to serve a congregation whose members are willing to try new things and take some risks. I am a creative and resourceful thinker, and am effective in encouraging people in new directions. Last Advent in our busy and cheerful church, many were weary and even depressed when the New Year arrived. We recognized the unacknowledged grief and struggles among our members, and are planning a special "Blue Sunday" this Advent to specifically attend to the difficult losses and concerns that have been a part of this year's experiences.
